Tooth decay is caused by a bacteria called plaque. Plaque uses sugar, found in food and beverages, as a source of energy to convert these sugars into harmful acids. These acids attack the tooth enamel which eventually cause the enamel to breakdown resulting in cavities. A sealant is a plastic resin applied on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth because these teeth have pits and grooves that are hard to keep clean. The sealant binds to these pits and grooves and protects the enamel from plaque and acids. It only takes a few minutes to seal each tooth. First the teeth are cleaned, then they are pre-treated with a conditioner which helps the sealant stick to the tooth. Lastly, the sealant is painted on the tooth enamel where it hardens and bonds to the tooth via a curing light. Sealants can last for up to several years and they protect the tooth surface from decay as long as the remain intact. The obvious candidates for sealants are children and teenagers but adults can benefit from sealants as well.
